As you roll into Longreach the unmistakable red and white livery of a Qantas jumbo jet dominates the skyline from kilometres away. Inside the dedicated museum, you’ll uncover many a story linked to the founding of Australia’s national airline. Across the road, you’ll spot the shimmering curved roof of another Australian icon. Just like Hugh Sawrey’s famed artwork A Vision Splendid, the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame pays tribute to the Aussie Stockman. The five themed galleries also celebrate the stories of Indigenous Australians, Pastoralists and  Explorers.

"Once a jolly swagman camped by a billabong..." You'll be forgiven for relentlessly whistling this famous tune while you're in Winton, as it's the very home of Banjo Patterson's 'Waltzing Matilda'. First settled in 1875 and originally called 'Pelican Waterhole', Winton has plenty on offer to keep you busy for at least a day or two. The town is home to Boulder opals that you can view and buy in town and a day trip will take you to Queensland's oldest opal fields at Opalton. Also just out of Winton is Lark Quarry, where 93 million year-old dinosaur fossils will give you a glimpse into prehistoric times.

Famil Code: PNO-PNO2DAY

  • One nights accommodation in historic Charleville

Immortalised in Slim Dusty's song by the same name, Charleville is the largest town in Queensland's southwest and is a hub for visitors and pastoralists alike. In the heart of 'mulga country', Charleville and surrounding pastoral properties are rich in history, flora and fauna.

Famous for being Australia's furthest town from the ocean, Eromanga is located 108 kilometres west of Quilpie on the fully sealed Natural Sciences Loop and a quick detour off the Warrego Way. A visit to the Eromanga Natural History Museum to learn about the dinosaur fossils found near the town is a must! The museum is discovering new Australian dinosaurs in an area of Australia where they have previously never been found.

Post Event Famils

South West: Roma & St George
Dates: 25 - 27 November 2022
Famil Code: PAO-PAO2DAY
Includes:

  • Two nights accommodation in charming outback Roma
  • A cultural, historical and agricultural day tour
  • A full day tour exploring Carnarvon Ranges
  • A historical town tour in a 1917 bakery truck

Only 350 kilometres north-west of Toowoomba, Roma is sometimes referred to as the 'gateway to the outback'. Home to the southern hemisphere's largest sale yards, visitors can get a feel for the outback by perching on a fence or taking a coveted possie on the viewing platform to watch the action at Roma Saleyards. To get a real feel for the town itself, take a walk along the heritage-listed Heroes' Avenue, planted with more than 100 bottle trees. Don't miss The Big Rig Oil and Gas Interpretative Centre and Night Show Sunset Experience for an interactive insight into the hardships and heroic stories of oil drilling and exploration.

You’ll need at least a week to fully appreciate the beauty and diversity of Carnarvon Gorge, in Carnarvon National Park, set deep in the Central Highlands. Walk, drive, hike and camp in the park's four sections and be captivated by the diverse landscapes and rich wildlife of the Sandstone Wilderness.

From the moment you arrive to the time you leave, St George relaxes the senses in all the right ways. Perched on the banks of the mighty Balonne River, it is just the place from which to explore the beautiful Balonne Shire.
